Ever have those moments when you feel like you are trapped on a course and there is nowhere to run? We often feel limited in our ability to change our present circumstances, particularly when others are involved. Such a situation is commonly known as a rut. A few days before Christmas, I was home visiting with my son James and his Fiancé Haley when we heard my husband Luis shouting with urgency from outside. “Jackie! Come look!” he shouted. His tone caused the three of us to rush and see what was going on. There, just a few feet below us, in cold damp soil, was a chubby little white and tan Guinea Pig. We could see the fear in his bright pink eyes. Like a rick-a-shay marble he darted back and forth around the plants in the crowded 8 foot flower bed.at the front of our home. The poor little creature was trapped with no way of escaping the giants peering down at him. Just over our heads we could hear the neighborhood predatory birds noisily scramble- waiting for lunch. After about 20 minutes of a hilarious pursuit, James herded the little guy into a laundry basket. Once inside our warm home, the Guinea Pig (aka “Piglet”) finally settled down over a bowl of lettuce and carrots. We wondered how Piglet started his excellent adventure into our yard. Then we settled into caring for our new little acquaintance.
Now Piglet’s days in his plastic habitat consist of paper shredding, munching on hay and snacking on kibble. He has figured out a way to create a tunnel for himself under the brown paper lining his living space. With all of his might, Piglet works to drag large leaves of Romaine into his tunnel and I think he chews while in motion- Guinea Pig busy work. Like Piglet, we may find ourselves in a similar place- living only to secure food and shelter. Then suddenly it hits us, we are in a rut! Staying in a rut is disheartening and can challenge our faith; Time for an excellent adventure? Unlike Piglet, Creator GOD has given us options that a domesticated animal does not enjoy. Count your blessings! GOD does not hover over us waiting to capture us in His heavenly laundry basket. Nor does He wait patiently for us to run into a clearing so He can swoop down on us like birds of prey. Instead, Almighty GOD patiently cares for us, allowing us to make choices that can change eternity. He provides for our needs and encourages our spiritual growth by sending people our way who need to know GOD places a great value on them. The routine of our daily lives involve contacts with other two legged creatures. These contacts allow us fresh opportunities to share His love. The simple sharing of a name, a handshake or a smile with a new acquaintance, opens the LORD’s door of opportunity. Then we may choose to speak of His goodness and to share His grace in our lives. Once we do that, we are out of our ruts and onto an excellent adventure! We grow as others know that our GOD is good!
“Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them who are in any trouble, by the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted of God. For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also abounds by Christ.” 2 Corinthians 1: 3-5
